In CNC milling machines with up to five axes can be programmed via machine control. The axes are regulated individually or at the same time with feeds. The travelling distances are measured by means of glass measuring blocks. We differentiate between incremental and absolute travelling distance measuring systems. CNC milling machines run sometimes with extreme feeds of 60 m/min and rotational speed of 100,000/min, the values are however usually clearly below. The tools are stored in a tool changer magazine, they are automatically recalled when required and changed by means of a tool changer. The CNC technique allows 3D milling which allows production of more complicated 3D contours. The work piece is frequently started in many small rows that are positioned next to each other. In five axis milling the machine can position and move the milling cutter on the work piece in any angle; with this the production of extremely complex 3 D contours is possible. The work room coordinates are the characteristics of a milling machine, i.e. which travelling distance is possible in coordinates X, Y and Z, which input power and which rpm range is available.
